The Maths

The VAT Formula, Explained

Adding VAT to a price always follows the same two-step formula. Once you understand it, you can work out any VAT-inclusive price by hand, or simply use the calculator above to skip the arithmetic.

VAT Amount = Net Price × VAT Rate ÷ 100
Gross Price = Net Price + VAT Amount

Here’s how that looks with real numbers, across a few different currencies and rates:

Example 1

£100 net + 20% VAT

£100 × 20 ÷ 100 = £20 VAT
£100 + £20 = £120 gross

Example 2

£250 net + 5% VAT

£250 × 5 ÷ 100 = £12.50 VAT
£250 + £12.50 = £262.50 gross

Example 3

€500 net + 21% VAT

€500 × 21 ÷ 100 = €105 VAT
€500 + €105 = €605 gross

Use Cases

When Should You Add VAT?

Adding VAT comes up constantly in day-to-day business admin. Common situations include:

  • Invoices — showing the VAT-inclusive total a client owes.
  • Quotes — giving a customer a realistic, all-in price upfront.
  • Retail pricing — setting shelf or online prices that include VAT.
  • Online stores — displaying VAT-inclusive checkout totals.
  • Freelancing — adding VAT to project fees once VAT-registered.
  • Construction — pricing materials and labour with VAT included.
  • Consultancy — issuing VAT-inclusive fee proposals.
  • Accounting — checking figures when reconciling sales records.
Watch Out For

Common Mistakes When Adding VAT

  • Using the incorrect VAT rate — applying the wrong percentage for the country, product or service category.
  • Adding VAT twice — recalculating VAT on a price that is already VAT-inclusive.
  • Confusing gross and net prices — quoting a net figure where a gross one was expected, or vice versa.
  • Incorrect rounding — rounding mid-calculation instead of on the final figure, which can create small but noticeable errors.
  • Wrong VAT category — treating a reduced-rate or zero-rated item as if it were standard-rated.
