Transparent Method
The formula box below shows exactly how each figure is worked out.
How the Remove VAT Formula Works
To remove VAT from a gross (VAT-inclusive) price, divide it by 1 plus the VAT rate expressed as a decimal. This gives the net price. Subtracting the VAT rate is then simply the gross price minus the net price.
Show the Remove VAT formula
For the UK standard rate of 20%, this means dividing the gross price by 1.2.
Worked Example
A retailer sells a product for £120.00, VAT-inclusive, at the UK standard rate of 20%.
| Gross Price | £120.00 |
| Divide by 1.2 | £120.00 ÷ 1.2 |
| Net Price | £100.00 |
| VAT Amount | £20.00 |
